As a kid I remember going to a few races at Cherokee Speedway
in Gaffney, SC. It was one of the top dirt tracks in the area and alwys featured great car counts and awesome racing. Well, I guess something changed because this article was in today's Spartanburg Herald. Why the heck would you downsize such an awesome track? Has the racing deteriorated that far since I moved to Florida? Looks to me like Cherokee might be another great and historic track in decline and in serious trouble. BTW...Their website is apparently either moved or no longer functioning. Not a good sign! March Madness will kick off the 2007 racing season today at Gaffney's Cherokee Speedway. A $10,000-to-win, 75-lap O'Reilly Southern All-Stars super late model feature will headline the racing card on the newly configured oval. During the off-season, the track was downsized from 1/2 mile to 4/10ths of a mile in an effort to promote closer racing. The gates open at 11 a.m. and racing gets under way at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 for the grandstands and $35 for the pits. Call (864) 489-1969 or go to www.cherokee-speedway.com for more information.
